Moving States with a Learner's Permit: What Transfers and What Doesn't
Learner's permits often do not transfer between states the way full licenses do. Here is what to expect and how to avoid losing progress.
Full licenses transfer between states fairly smoothly. Learner's permits are another matter: because each state's graduated licensing program has its own ages, holding periods, and practice-hour rules, a permit from one state often does not slot neatly into another state's system.
What commonly happens
Policies vary widely, but these are the typical outcomes when a permit holder moves:
- Retaking the written test. Many states require new-resident permit applicants to pass their own knowledge exam, even with an out-of-state permit in hand.
- Credit for time held. Some states count the time you already held your old permit toward their holding period; others restart the clock.
- Practice hours. States with supervised-hour requirements may accept a parent's certification of hours driven elsewhere—or may not.
Because the range of outcomes is wide, call the new state's DMV before you move and ask exactly what they will honor. Bring documentation: your permit, proof of when it was issued, and any practice log.
Protect your progress
Keep a written supervised-driving log with dates, durations, and conditions, signed by the supervising adult. Even where it is not required, it is the evidence that can save you months.
