A Parent’s Guide to Helping Your Teen Study for the Permit Test

Your teen does not need you to be a driving instructor for the written test—but they do need accountability and a calm study environment.

Set a realistic timeline

Most teens need several days of consistent study, not one marathon session. Agree on a daily window—15 to 30 minutes—and stick to it.

Quiz them on weak areas

Ask them to explain answers in their own words. If they can teach a rule to you, they understand it.

Model patience

Test anxiety is normal. Celebrate progress on practice scores rather than focusing only on the upcoming DMV visit.

After they pass

The permit is step one. Keep conversations going about distraction-free driving, passenger rules, and night-driving limits in your state.
