Driving Test Prep: A 7-Day Study Plan for the Written Exam

Short answer: you can prepare for the written driving permit exam in about a week with 20–30 focused minutes a day — read one handbook section, drill 15 practice questions, and review your misses. Spacing it out beats a single cram session because your brain retains spaced learning far better.

Here's a simple 7-day driving test prep plan for the written exam (this covers the knowledge test, not the behind-the-wheel road test).

Days 1–2: Signs and signals

Learn the shape-and-color system for road signs once, and they become almost free points. Read the signs chapter of your handbook, then do a short practice set focused only on signs.

Days 3–4: Right-of-way and speed

These are the topics that fail the most people. Cover intersections, yielding, merging, school zones, and speed limits. After reading, take a mixed practice set and note every miss.

Day 5: Safe-driving and alcohol laws

Cover following distance, hazard response, seat-belt and child-restraint rules, and under-21 alcohol laws. These show up on every state's exam.

Day 6: Full timed mock exam

Take a complete practice test under real conditions — clock running, no hints. Pick your state to start one: California, Texas, Florida, or New York. Anything below 80% on a topic goes on tomorrow's review list.

Day 7: Targeted review + logistics

Re-drill only your weakest topics, confirm the documents you need to bring, and get a good night's sleep. Walk in calm — confidence here comes from preparation, not luck.
