In California, how close to a fire hydrant may you legally park?

  • 25 feet
  • Five feet
  • 10 feet
  • No closer than 15 feet

Correct answer

No closer than 15 feet

Why this is correct

California CVC §22514 prohibits parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. The distance lets fire crews access the hydrant from either side if a hose needs to swing around your vehicle. Violations frequently earn towing in addition to the citation — fire response delays can be fatal.
